10 shocking reasons why your diet is not helping you lose weight
Here are some examples of how good foods turn bad:
1. Seeds and Nuts
They do contain healthy unsaturated fats. However, unsaturated fats (no matter how healthy it sounds) are STILL fats, and will not be beneficial in maintaining our waist line. Eating large amounts of seeds and nuts (unconscious eating, especially in front of TV) will not only spike your fats intake but also the amount of calories you will be consuming. ep, healthy. Most nuts are more than fifty percent fat!
2. Fruit Juice
Fruit Juice may sound healthy, but it can be jam packed with calories. A cup of apple juice would usually be made up of 2 to 3 apples, hence tripling the amount of calories taken in as opposed to eating the fresh fruit itself. Interesting, a glass of fruit juice has the same amount of sugar and calories as a glass of soda. The only difference is it contains the healthier type of sugar (fructose), but sugar nonetheless. It is also important to note the fruit juice sold in supermarkets may be in fact concentrates, made from artificial flavoring and jam packed with sugar content.
3. Dried Fruits
As healthy as it sounds, eating dried fruits may actually have the same calorie content as eating, let’s say, Oreo cookies. The only plus point is the fact that it is lower in fat content. However, we must know that dried fruits are actually energy-dense food. The water content of the fruit is taken out, leaving behind concentrates of sugar and calories. Eat dried fruit sparing. Eating fresh fruits instead would more than half the calories intake.
4. Salads
Many people believe that replacing a meal with salad is definitely a fail proof way of losing weight. WRONG. Surprisingly, certain salads contains up to 700 calories and 50 grams of fats. This is equivalent to eating 2 slices of pepperoni pizza or 2 big Macs! So much for the effort of dieting. One of the most unhealthy salads is actually Caesar Salad, which is jam packed with high fat mayonnaise and full of bacon bits and bread crumbs loaded with grease and butter. Not to forgot the high fat content of grated cheese as well as various seeds and nuts. Therefore, the trick is to CHOOSE FAT-FREE DRESSING AND TOPPINGS that goes with your salad.
5. Muesli Bars
The majority are high fat, high-sugar, high-calorie crap. Avoid them.
6. Cereal
The vast majority of supermarket cereals are high-sugar, processed junk. Most of the popular cereals contains up to 40% sugar. Great for the dentists, not so good for our kids. Or you. Look on the back of the pack and as a rule, the less ingredients, the better. Not only they are bad for your teeth, they also do not contain much beneficial vitamins and proteins to maintain a healthy body. It is practically like eating cardboard, topped with huge amount of sugar. Choose to eat raw muesli or unprocessed bran instead. The more natural and unprocessed, the better. Also, have skim milk rather than full-cream milk for your cereal!
7. Low-fat ice-cream/ Sorbet
Though lower in fat, the fats are replaced by even more sugar. The high sugar content which translate into high carbohydrate content, would eventually be turned into fat with the lack of sufficient exercise. Furthermore, it is also bad for your teeth and my also cause you to be even more lethargic after the sugar rush wears off.
8. Vegetarian meals
Some people makes the fatal assumption vegetarian = vegetables = healthy. Erroneous mistake. Some are actually high in fat, containing plenty of oil. To make up for the lack of flavour, high fat coconut milk are also commonly used, together with even more salt and seasoning, that will greatly increase your salt intake. In case you didn't know, 1 cup of coconut milk contains 57 grams of fats!!! (An average adult should consume less than 60 grams of fats in a day). So choose wisely the type of vegetarian food you are putting into your mouth.
Surprisingly somehow people do consider muffin as a healthy snack. The truth is, it is CAKE! Muffins are usually made of the typical ingredients like processed flour, loads of sugar, egg and some form of fat (shortening). It is in fact a high fat, high sugar content mini sized cake. Don't be fooled.
10. Sports Drink
Let's face it. Sports drinks are basically colored, sugar water. They may sound healthy since they are associated to sports, but in fact they are only beneficial if you are heavily exercising and requires the additional glycogen for your body. Sports drinks are packed with sugar and sometimes sodium (for water retention). Please keep to plain drinking water instead! (They are zero calories! :D)
Lastly, hope you are more aware of the various "not-so-healthy" food often overlooked or misinterpreted by people. Do check the nutrition labels, and make informed decisions by gathering information from various sources. I wish you all the best with your fat loss journey - the healthy way.
